William R. Ryberg

Oct 25, 1946 — Oct 18, 2026

Davenport, IA

William Roy "Bill" Ryberg, 79, passed from this life on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at home in Davenport, after a four-month battle with leukemia.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Davenport, with visitation in the church parlor one hour before the service. He will be buried at Davenport Memorial Park with a graveside service held there in the Chapel. Cremation will take place prior to services at Trimble Crematory, Moline, Illinois, under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities. Donations may be made to Trinity Cathedral Food Pantry or Deeby’s Senior Chihuahua Rescue.

Bill was born October 25, 1946, in Moline to Eva (Gruske) and Roy Ryberg. He grew up on the family farm in rural Milan. He graduated from Rockridge High School before receiving an associate degree from Black Hawk College and a bachelor’s degree from Augustana College.

He began his career in journalism as a police reporter for the Quad-City Times in 1968. He eventually became the night city editor. It was at the newspaper that he met his future wife, Linda Anderson, also a reporter. They were married in 1974 and celebrated 52 years together.

In 1976, Bill joined the staff of the Des Moines Register, retiring in 2007. He and Linda established a freelance writing and editing business after his retirement, which he enjoyed for the rest of his life.

Bill was a quiet man with a sharp sense of humor. He was devoted to his three children, his grandson, and his extended family. He loved summers at the cottage at Houghton Lake, Michigan, enjoyed attending live local theater, and was a political junkie. He loved dogs, especially the three chihuahuas the family had over the years – Carmi, Zap, and Vienna.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; his sons, Steven (Cece), and Kevin (Molly); his daughter, Julie; his grandson George Ryberg; two special nieces, Emma and Alicia Anderson, and his brother-in-law Steven Anderson (Yali).
