Obituary

Ronald “Ron” Gusta, 80, of Eldridge, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9, 2026, surrounded by family, after a brief battle with cancer.

Ron was born on December 19, 1945, to Realto Sr. and Veronica (Zapf) Gusta. A proud patriot, he honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps from June 1963 to June 1967. In recognition of his service and dedication, he received numerous awards and commendations, including the Air Medal with 10 stars and the Navy Unit Commendation.

On May 30, 1981, Ron married the love of his life, Shirley Lassen. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, and countless memories.

A man of few words, Ron had a quiet strength about him. Stoic by nature, he wasn't one to make a fuss, but those who knew him best appreciated his wonderful sense of humor. He was always a good sport when it came to the family's many shenanigans, projects, and adventures, taking it all in stride with his signature quiet humor.

Ron found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved spending time on the lake, the companionship of his dogs, a good bacon cheeseburger, and, above all, time with family. He didn't need grand occasions to enjoy life.

To his great-nephews, Bennett and Hayes, he was affectionately known as “Uncle Ronda,” a nickname that will forever bring smiles and fond memories to his family.

Ron is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley; his sons, Jeff (Leigh) Gusta of Carterville, Illinois, and Aaron Gusta of Eldridge, Iowa; his grandsons; Austin (Callie) O’Brien and Aidan Gusta; his sister- and brother-in-law, Deb (Neil) Lassen-Ealy; his nephew, Alex (Jade Johnston), and niece, Eva (Matt) Schmid; and his great-nephews, Bennett and Hayes Schmid, along with other many cherished family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Realto Sr. and Veronica Gusta; his sister, Fran Alger; his brothers, Realto Jr. “Gus” Gusta and Robert Gusta; and his in-laws, Marvin and Bertha Lassen.

A private celebration of Ron's life will be held with family, followed by a private burial with military honors at Rock Island National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Ron may not have been a man of many words, but his life spoke volumes through his love of family, his devotion to his country, and the quiet strength with which he carried himself. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
