Robert E. “Bob” Schmit, 87, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Genesis Medical Center East, Davenport, surrounded by family.

A gathering to celebrate Bob’s life is 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Pebble Creek Clubhouse, 3851 Forest Grove Drive, LeClaire, Iowa.  The celebration will be casual with heavy appetizers and drinks being served.  Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, Illinois, under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities.

Robert Eugene Schmit was born January 14, 1937, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the son of Leonard and Lona (Buros) Schmit.  He served in the U.S. Army.  He married Carol Patrie and the couple had two children prior to separating.  He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UW-La Crosse and went on to earn his Master’s Degree from Denver University.

He worked as a barber before entering the field of social work.  He worked first for Vera French Mental Health Center before spending a majority of his career at Iowa Schools Area Education Agency.   He was a skilled clay artist, landscape gardener, wine connoisseur, and fisherman.  He also enjoyed playing poker and bridge with the same group for over four decades.

Bob is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Dawn Schmit of Bettendorf; a daughter, Cathryn Schmit of Las Vegas, Nevada; two grandchildren, Sam Nowell and Madelyn Schmit; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Schmit.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Kenneth and Ronald Schmit.
