Richard E. Durbin, 84, of Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, November 15, 2023, at home.
Services to celebrate Richard’s life will be held Tuesday, November 21, beginning with a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. The celebration will continue with a family-directed time of sharing at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established.
Richard Eugene Durbin was born December 6, 1938, in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Eugene and Mary (Desannoy) Durbin.
After graduating from Moline High School, Richard dedicated three years of his life to serving in the U.S. Air Force. On April 24, 1974, he married the love of his life, Donna K. Lindoerfer, and their union became a source of enduring strength and joy. Richard and Donna shared a profound bond that withstood the tests of time until her passing on August 13, 2015.
Throughout his professional life, Richard contributed his skills and dedication to various endeavors. He worked for renowned companies such as Caterpillar, International Harvester, Royal Neighbors, and served on the toll bridge for the City of Rock Island. However, his most notable venture was owning and operating Durbin's Cleaning Service during the 1970s and 1980s, leaving an indelible mark on the community he served.
Richard's zest for life was infectious, and those who knew him will remember him for the following:
Fishing Enthusiast: Richard found solace and joy in the art of fishing. It was a pursuit that allowed him to connect with nature and create cherished memories.
Infectious Humor: Richard had a unique ability to bring laughter into any room. His humor was spontaneous and genuine, a quality that endeared him to many.
Devoted Husband: Richard's love for his late wife, Donna, was unparalleled. His commitment and devotion to her were a testament to the depth of their connection.
Die-Hard Chicago Cubs Fan: Richard was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, who was cherished being in Chicago with his son Jason’s family when they won the 2016 World Series.
Sweet Tooth Secret Agent: Richard had a penchant for indulging in sweets, often attempting to satisfy his sweet tooth without getting caught in the act.
Cherished Family Time: Above all, Richard cherished moments spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He found immense joy in their company and took pride in being a loving presence in their lives.
Richard is survived by three children, Niki (Art) Fallon of Phoenix, Arizona, Jason (Lisa) Durbin of Chicago, Illinois, and Joe Durbin of Moline; grandchildren, Alexander Franks of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Kaylyn (Mason Potter) Durbin and Dylan Durbin, both of Moline, Elijah Hite-Fallon of Dover, Delaware, Joshua Durbin and Samantha Durbin, both of Chicago, Tyler (Kat Wilkerson) Durbin and Emily Durbin, both of Moline; Ida McCrae of Rock Island, who was like a daughter to Richard; and Savannah Carpenter of Moline, who was like a granddaughter to him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna Durbin; a daughter, Danielle Orton; a son, James Durbin; and a brother, Harold Durbin.
