Michael Edward Nichols, 83, of Rio Communities, New Mexico, completed his Earthly journey Tuesday morning, December 19, 2023, in the peaceful comfort of his home.
A hospitality gathering to celebrate Mike’s life will be held 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe, lower level of 701 12th Street, Moline, Illinois. Mike donated his body to the University of New Mexico and asked that any memorials made be in the form of donations to your favored charity.
Born April 8, 1940, in Waterloo, IA, to Curtis and Jean Nichols, Mike was raised in Evansdale, IA, with six siblings. After a brief service in the Marines, Mike married Josephine Modzelewski (JoAnn). and they had six children together. The family lived in Iowa and Illinois for a number of years when Mike entered his second stage of life. Mike began a life with Michael Perez in 1981, which lasted 42 years, settling in multiple residences in Illinois; Kansas; Florida; Minnesota, where they were married in 2015; and ending in New Mexico.
He had multiple careers starting in retail grocery for Lucky Foods; retail food industry for Ponderosa Steakhouse; hotel industry for Hyatt; and ending in retail grocery again for Cub foods when he finally fully retired in 2007.
Mike loved dogs, particularly Border Collies, horses and raised and showed prize-winning canaries in his retirement. He was an excellent cook and liked to garden and can his own vegetables. Mike made friends with everyone he met and maintained lasting friendships which still endure. In his final months, Mike was blessed with a renewed and loving relationship with JoAnn and was reconnecting with his children. He is loved deeply by many and will be greatly missed.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Jean; brother, James; son, Curtis; and granddaughter, Debra Ann. He is survived by his loving husband, Michael Perez; former wife JoAnn; and children: Coylie, Josephine (Rich), Gordon, Gene, Sara (Miles); sisters: Annette (Gaylen), Mary, Kathleen, Roberta; brother, Kenny (Liz); sister-in-law, Karon (James); and multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nephews, nieces and dear friends.
