Rock Island, Illinois

Obituary

Mia Rose Mercedes Lopez, 10, beloved daughter of Marissa Lopez of Rock Island, Illinois, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2026, at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, leaving behind a world made brighter by her beautiful spirit

In April, Mia underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor and began a courageous six-month fight against cancer. She faced each challenge with a strength and determination far beyond her years, inspiring everyone who knew her.

Mia had a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit that could make people laugh and brighten even the hardest days. She loved dancing and gymnastics. She loved dancing and gymnastics, and music always held a special place in her heart, especially the girl group KATSEYE. She was proud to be one of their biggest “EYEKONS”. She also enjoyed going to school at Rock Island Center for Math & Science, where she was a fifth-grade student. Like many kids her age, Mia knew what really mattered about school — recess and lunch were her absolute favorites!

More than anything, Mia loved being surrounded by the people who meant the most to her. She treasured her friends and family. Mia was a true momma’s girl, and she and Marissa shared an extraordinary bond. They were inseparable, connected by a love that words can hardly describe. Theirs was a beautiful relationship that will forever remain at the heart of Marissa’s life.

Mia’s life was much too brief, but the love she gave and the joy she brought will never be measured in years. Her laughter will live on in the stories her friends tell, her spirit will dance on in the hearts of those who loved her, and her courage will continue to inspire everyone whose life she touched. Mia will always be her family’s bright, beautiful girl — forever loved, forever missed, and never forgotten.

Those left to cherish Mia’s memory include her mother, Marissa, and her sister, Avianna Wermuth-Gulley, along with countless family members and friends who loved her dearly.

Services to celebrate Mia's life will be announced in the near future.  Memorials may be made to the family.
