Melvin J. Loding, 91, of Moline, Illinois, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Allure of the Quad Cities, Moline.
Visitation is 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Duane Lahti officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Memorials may be made to local animal shelters.
Melvin John Loding was born February 18, 1935, at Moline Public Hospital, the son of Melvin. Sr. and Bernice (Henderson) Loding. He graduated from Moline High School in 1952 and Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, in 1956, as a geologist.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1956 and served as a topographical surveyor in Stuttgart, Germany, until his discharge in 1958. He started his career with Deere & Co. at the Planter Works in 1958 as an industrial engineer, working in various positions before he retired in 1985. Following his retirement, Mel joined the Teledyne Corp., Santa Monica, California, as a consulting engineer, traveling to various Air Force bases throughout the country.
Mel was a 30-year member of the Boys Scouts of America, having served as a scoutmaster at First Congregational Church, Moline, and in Germany. He later served in various positions at the district level and attended the National Jamboree in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was an Eagle Scout.
He enjoyed taking various youth groups on geological field trips throughout the area. He also enjoyed traveling, with many stops in Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and his favorite destination, Alaska. His hobbies included photography and fossil hunting.
Mel was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Mosse, Svithiod Club, and Friends Circle Club.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Steve Korzeniewski of Stewartsville, New Jersey; his grandson, Steven Korzeniewski, and his wife, Liahnna; and his granddaughter, Anna Korzeniewski.
