Marceleen T. Hauck

October 23, 1929 — February 6, 2023

Marceleen (Marcie) Theresa Hauck, a resident of Moline, Illinois for nearly 55 years, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was 93 years old.

Marcie was born October 23, 1929, in a very small town, Kemmerer, Wyoming, to Lena (Griff) and Roy Steenburgen. She grew up in Granger, Wyoming, and Boise, Idaho. As a young woman she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she met her future husband, Paul Anthony Hauck, when they both studied at the University of Utah. They married on November 26, 1953.

Together they moved to the Midwest – living in East Moline, Illinois; Marshall Minnesota; and, Peoria, Illinois, before settling in Moline, Illinois – where they raised their three daughters. In addition to being a full-time mother, Marcie was an accomplished mixed-media artist, a talented cook, and an elegant hostess. She had a remarkable sense of beauty and design, which she lovingly and thoughtfully expressed in her homes and personal style. She was a fiercely independent thinker, a passionate liberal feminist, and a political activist. She threw herself into supporting Democratic political campaigns. She was deeply involved with the ACLU, serving on the board of the local affiliate. Marcie instilled in her family a deep appreciation for beauty and the arts, and the importance of being well informed and taking an active role in fighting for your beliefs. She was a force.

Never one to let age hold her back, in her late 50s, Marcie rode her bicycle more than 900 miles throughout Europe. At 86 she rode a bus overnight from Iowa to Washington, DC, to protest at the historic 2017 Women’s March.

Marcie is survived by her daughters, Kathy (Henry) Holladay, Melanie Hauck (Jim Hertel), and Stephanie (Craig) Marchesi; grandchildren, Teresa Dopler, Alex Hertel, Will Hertel, Grant Hertel, Robert Marchesi, and Christian Marchesi; great grandson Hunter Moore, and great-great grandson Cassius Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, parents (Lena and Roy) and a sister, Carmen.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Figge Art Museum, 225 West Second Street, Davenport, Iowa, 52801; or by phone at 563-345-6642.
