Mac Donald Dark was born April 21, 1928, at St. Francis Hospital in Macomb, Illinois. He was raised in Colchester, Illinois, to parents Samuel and Anna (McDonald) Dark. He married the love of his life, Margaret H. Hopkins, on November 19, 1953, in Colchester. The couple shared over 60 years of happy marriage together prior to her passing on January 7, 2014.

Mac proudly served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army National Guard for a total of four years, and was trained as a machinist. He later held positions as a tool and die maker for various companies. In 1962, he was hired by International Harvester in Moline and retired in 1988 after 26 years.

Mac was a devoted Baptist for his entire life. He attended the Silvis Heights Baptist Church, now the Crosstown Baptist Church, since 1965. He served in the roles of trustee and deacon during his years at the church.

Also, based on his youth, Mac was also interested in farming and owned farmland near his childhood home in the Colchester, Illinois area. Yearly, until he was no longer physically able, he helped the farmer harvest the crops, which he loved. He had a love for trains and for a short time worked as a fireman on a locomotive.

Mac was a very intelligent and knowledgeable individual and enjoyed conversations with people about their occupations or interests. He was a man always eager to learn and was a fan of reading and studying various subjects but preferred technical and financial subjects. Mac and Margaret enjoyed traveling, visiting relatives, and attending family gatherings. At age 97, Mac experienced and enjoyed zip-lining at Camp Manitoumi in central Illinois.

Mac is survived by his sister-in-law, Hazel Hopkins of New Philadelphia, Illinois; a brother-in-law, Tom Hopkins of Girard, Illinois; five nieces on the Dark’s side, Joyce Jamerson of Nelson, Virginia, Debra Lewis of St. Joseph, Missouri, Dianna Dark of Branson, Missouri, Brenda Allen of Jasper, Alabama, and Beverly Palma of Salinas, California; 9 nieces and 12 nephews on the Hopkins’s side of the family; and his friend and gracious neighbor, Doug Shappard. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife; and brothers, Thomas and James Dark.

The family would like to give special thanks to everyone at UnityPoint Hospice for the wonderful care given to Mac.
