Ira “Lee” Westlund, 68, of Moline, Illinois, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2026, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island. He went peacefully, knowing he was deeply loved and admired.
Visitation is 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 4, in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Graveside services and burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Vietnam Veterans of the Quad Cities will present military honors.
Lee Westlund was born on January 8, 1958, in Milan, Illinois, to Ralph Algot and Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Westlund. He entered the United States Marine Corps in the fall of 1975, where he completed high school and served with D Company, 3rd Amtrac Battalion, in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Lance Corporal Lee Westlund carried the primary title 1833-Amphibious Tractor Crewman and Tractor Mechanic, while also earning his rifle sharpshooter badge. Due to a family emergency, Lee was granted honorable discharge in the fall of 1977 and returned home to care for his family.
Lee was talented in many ways, pursuing any kind of work that allowed him to work with his hands. He obtained his auto mechanic certification and Associate’s Degree from Blackhawk College. Lee then obtained his CDL from Northwest Technical Institute, with which he traveled the U.S. as an over-the-road professional trucker.
He enjoyed both his time as a Marine and a truck driver because it afforded him the privilege of working towards his dream of traveling the world. He visited forty-three of our fifty states and spent thirty-four days crossing the Pacific Ocean to Australia and back. As a retired veteran, Lee entered several creative competitions and won a few awards for woodworking and art. He was always looking for ways to contribute his talents and help others in need.
Those left to honor Lee’s memory are his siblings, Nellie Westlund of Phoenix, Arizona, Lynn (Rudy) Masengarb of East Moline, Illinois, Dean (Becky) Westlund of North Carolina, and Larry (Julie) Westlund of Milan, Illinois; his five nieces and four nephews, whom he loved like his own children; and his six great-nieces and 13 great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mary Westlund.
