Lainey Jean Gladkin

July 20, 2023 — October 9, 2025

Milan, Illinois

As hearts overflow with love and sorrow, we celebrate the life of Lainey Jean Gladkin, whose radiant spirit touched everyone she encountered in her brief but extraordinary two years on this earth. Lovingly known as “Lainey Bird”, she came into this world fighting against all odds when she was born on July 20, 2023, in Moline, Illinois. After spending 78 courageous days in the NICU, she came home to her devoted parents, Kevin and Kelsey, and to the pure joy of her biggest admirer – her proud big brother, Cooper. From that moment on, Lainey filled every day with laughter, love, and light until she passed peacefully in her parents’ arms on October 9, 2025, at OSF Children’s Hospital in Peoria, Illinois.

Though her time here was far too short, Lainey’s impact was immeasurable. With her sparkling brown eyes framed by her signature purple glasses, she captured the hearts of everyone she met – friends, family, and even strangers passing by. Her eyes held the very essence of joy, curiosity, and strength, and not a day went by without someone commenting on their beauty. Lainey was the perfect combination of her parents, full of her Daddy’s strength and sense of adventure and her Mommy’s love for books and the outdoors, where she could be found on any given day watering the flowers in their yard.

Lainey lived life with boundless enthusiasm. She clocked countless miles walking hand-in-hand with Kelsey on their daily walks, while their fur baby Archie led the way. She loved their family adventures through her neighborhood – always waving and smiling at her adoring friends – whose days were instantly brightened the moment they locked eyes with Lainey. She also could never resist a good climb…on pretty much anything she could find, a trampoline jump, a bubbles-and-giggles party or an opportunity to proudly ride on Daddy’s lap while he mowed the yard. Some of her favorite moments were spent right beside her brother Cooper, riding co-pilot down the driveway, exploring outside, and laughing endlessly together. Cooper was first in line to protect “Sissy” and take her from one adventure to the next. Lainey also had a strong affinity for books and never turned down the chance to dive into a great story cuddled up in someone’s lap.

A perfect mix of sweetness and spunk, Lainey was independent, determined, and fiercely loving. She knew exactly what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to make it known – a beautiful reflection of her strong spirit. Despite facing medical challenges and undergoing surgeries, Lainey’s resilience never wavered. While her medical history may have included more terms than a young parent should ever know for their child, her medical journey could be summed up simply: Lainey Bird was a fighter and she fought through to get back to doing what she loved – living life to the fullest. The moment she came home from the hospital, she would jump right back into it – smiling, climbing, jumping, laughing, exploring and spreading joy.

Her parents, Kevin and Kelsey, were the unwavering pillars of her world – her greatest protectors and her truest comfort. God knew Lainey needed them, and they embodied strength, grace, and unconditional love at every turn. Together with Cooper, they gave her a life overflowing with warmth, excitement and laughter. And known for her adorable humor and hilarious antics, Lainey was a consistent source of that laughter with her family and friends. Even though she couldn’t talk yet, she was always trying to make everyone laugh and was always doing something funny or sneaky. Lainey will always be remembered for her persistent efforts to do somersaults randomly, no matter the surface and no matter the occasion.

Lainey’s light continues to shine in the lives she touched. She reminded us all to live fully, to find joy in every small moment, and to love without limits. In her final act of selflessness, Lainey became an organ donor, giving the precious gift of life to others – a reflection of her generous and radiant soul.

Kevin and Kelsey extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate teams at OSF Children’s Hospital and Early Intervention Therapy, whose care, expertise, and love for Lainey will forever be remembered.

Lainey Bird will be eternally cherished by her parents, Kevin and Kelsey; her big brother, Cooper; her grandparents; extended family; and the countless friends and neighbors whose lives were brightened by her joyful spirit. The peaceful beauty of the color lavender will serve as a constant reminder of her beautiful and tender soul.

Though our hearts ache in her absence, Lainey’s laughter, courage, and light will forever dance in the memories of all who loved her. She will always be our sunshine and our reminder of pure joy. Until we meet again, fly high our precious Lainey Bird. You are loved so very, very much.

A private burial will be held at Coal Valley Cemetery for immediate family.
