East Moline, Illinois

Julie M. Colgan, 57, of East Moline, Illinois, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2025, at Central Nursing Home in Chicago, Illinois.

Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, Illinois, under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities. Inurnment will take place in the future at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family.

Julie Marie Smith was born July 30, 1968, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Terry and Joan (Barsetti) Smith. She married Peter Colgan on May 4, 2001, at the Rock Island Botanical Center. He preceded her on March 19, 2023.

Creativity was woven into Julie’s life from the beginning. Her parents nurtured her artistic spark, which continued to grow during the many years her family owned and operated the Lighthouse Market and Mr. Home Grown, on Northwest Blvd in Davenport. Inspired by that environment, Julie opened her own flower shop, Blossoms, which she operated for several years. She later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, where her artistic talents and imagination flourished.

Julie was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa. She was a compassionate advocate and dedicated volunteer for Family Resources, supporting women impacted by domestic violence and rape. She played a key role in coordinating Take Back the Night each year and helped bring awareness to the cause.

In her free time, Julie spent time painting, drawing, and any arts her mind set to. She had a particular fondness for buying new plants, although caring for them was not her strength. Thankfully, her husband and son lovingly kept the plants thriving while she continued adding to the collection. Above all, she loved the time spent with her cats and son.

Julie is survived by her son, Ryan Colgan of Moline, IL; siblings, David (Linsey) Smith of Kirkwood, MO and Tony (Erika) Smith of Hills, Iowa; and her beloved cats, Puck, Curly, and Franklin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; parents, Terry and Joan Smith; and brother, Doug Smith.
