John Wesley Sloan was born February 4, 1940, in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Frisby Fred and Alma Mae (Koenig) Sloan. He proudly served in the United States Army and later worked in electrical at Stanley Corporation for 35 years. On November 24, 1972, he married Thalia “Terri” Ann Knoeferl in Kahoka, Missouri.
He was a proud member of IBEW Local 145. Everything he did, he did with his grandkids, whether it was taking the boys fishing, camping, feeding the geese at the river, or fixing bikes; the kids were always by his side. He and Terri enjoyed riding bikes along the river, and it wasn’t long before John earned the nickname “Mr. Fix It,” as neighborhood kids began bringing him their bikes and just about anything else that needed repair. He found joy in life’s simple moments, especially time spent at home with his dogs and cat. Whenever a storm rolled in, you could count on finding him outside, waiting and watching.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Terri; children, Gregory Sloan, Danya (Dave) Carton, Stephen (Lisa) Sloan, Elizabeth (Scott) Dobbels, and Angela (Chris Soppe) Sloan; 72 grandchildren & great-grandchildren; siblings, Karen Sampson and Sharon Sloan; and a cousin, Kay Wilson. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbra Carpenter; parents, Frisby and Alma (Henry Peiser) Sloan; and siblings, Fred Sloan, Shirley Verschore, Elizabeth Baumbach, and Barbara Sloan.
John will be remembered for his quiet strength, devotion to family, and unwavering work ethic. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched.
