John J. Newberry

John J. Newberry, 52, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed Sunday, April 19, 2026, at MercyOne Genesis Davenport Medical Center.

Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, Illinois, under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities. Private burial will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to The Arthritis Foundation in John’s Memory.

John Jay Newberry was born on November 13, 1973, in Ohio. He attended college in both Cincinatti and Portsmouth, Ohio. He married the love of his life, Shantel Conover, on December 17, 2010, in Glendale, Colorado.

John was a man of many talents and deep passions. He created and led an online Dungeons & Dragons game as a dedicated Dungeon Master, gathering weekly with friends from all walks of life. He was a voracious reader, often reading or listening to more than 100 books a year, with a special love for audiobooks; something he proudly shared with his son, David. His love of storytelling extended into voice acting, bringing characters to life with enthusiasm and creativity.

He had a determination to understand the world around him; if he didn’t know an answer, he would research until he found one. He was an avid enthusiast of history and Native American culture. In the kitchen, he was just as talented, even earning a County Fair Blue Ribbon for his homemade biscuits.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 15 years, Shantel Conover; his son, David Newberry; and many family members and friends in Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
