John Joseph Mahon, Jr. was born on March 5, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, to John Sr. and Salome (Stumpf) Mahon. He proudly served for six years in the Army National Guard before marrying the love of his life, Sandra "Sandy" Kerkhover, on April 24, 1965, in Chester, Illinois.
John enjoyed a 37½-year career with John Deere, serving in St. Louis, Baltimore, and Moline before retiring in 1994 as Controller.
Running and biking were passions of John’s. He completed nine Ironman triathlons in Canada and one in Hawaii, in addition to numerous half-marathons, marathons, and ultramarathons. Music was another enduring love. As a young man in St. Louis, he played saxophone with his band, performing alongside artists in legendary venues.
In quieter moments, John enjoyed reading, following British Premier League, watching old movies, woodworking, and photography. Above all, he treasured his family. Nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his grandchildren and enthusiastically supporting them in all of their pursuits.
John is survived by his beloved wife of over 61 years, Sandy; two children, Lisa Morris of Monroe, Georgia, and John (Mindy) Mahon of Davenport; his pride and joy, seven grandchildren, Sam (Olivia) Adkisson of Eldrige, Iowa, Morgan (Phil Bursch) Mahon of Portland, Oregon, Jonah (Elizabeth) Adkisson of Davenport, Luke Billingsley of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Carter Mahon of Marion, Iowa, Jacob Mahon of Davenport, and Brent Billingsley of Davenport; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Luna; and siblings, Joan Ybarra of West Covina, California, Barbara Dite of Kirkwood, Missouri, and Robert (Barb) Mahon of Frontenac, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, David Morris.
The family would like to give thanks for the special care given to John by UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island, MercyOne Genesis Silvis Medical Center, as well as Silvis Center and Genesis Hospice.
