John C. Baker

West Liberty, Iowa

John Carl Baker died in his home on April 21, 2023 in West Liberty, Iowa at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril and Dolly Baker, and his first wife Mary Feller Baker his second wife Nancy Baker and daughter Christine Diane Baker Freemon.

He and his twin brother were born on June 2, 1939 in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from East High School, Waterloo in 1957 and served the United States Army as part of the 101st Airborne Division. He retired from Hon Industries in 2001. He was a long time HAM radio operator; He loved fishing and tinkering with electronics and engines. He passionately collected hand crank meat grinders in hopes of replicating his mother breakfast hash. He founded “The University of Atalissa” in 1982 a local tavern. He enjoyed hosting his friends and buying rounds for friends and strangers alike. He was quick to laugh always ready with a witty retort.

He is also survived by his wife of 30 years, Flora NeVada (Fuller) of West Liberty, IA, brothers, twin Donald James Baker of Waterloo, Iowa, Verne Frank Baker of Moneta, Virginia, two daughters, Suzette Baker Thorby of Lanesboro, Minnesota and Debra Baker Janes of Euless, Texas, 3 grandchildren Abby Wier Winston, Haley Wier and Christopher Wier, 7 great-grandchildren Lily, Marley, Evelyn, Vivienne, Lincoln, Edison and Savannah, three step-sons Brent King, Kristopher King and Corey King, 3 step-grandsons, Kelsen, Brayton, and Ethan King, One step-granddaughter Kinsey King.

His friends and family and all that know him will miss his natural curiosity, quick wit and smart mouth. He was as much fun as any person you’d ever meet. As he got older he would show a sensitive streak that would cause him to tear up remembering those he lost.
