Gloria Jane Sheesley was born July 27, 1933, in Viola, Illinois, the daughter of Glen Henry and Ruth Margarette (Cheney) Sheesley. Her high school yearbook stated her ambition was to “marry Chuck,” and her prized possession was her diamond ring. She accomplished her ambition after graduating from Orion High School in 1952 when she married the love of her life, Charles H. “Charlie” Serres, on May 3, 1953.

They shared over 54 wonderful years of marriage and raised two children together, Lynnie and Larry. Jane and Charlie created countless memories with their children, many grandchildren, and neighborhood friends before Charlie’s passing on June 6, 2007.

Jane worked in the food service industry for most of her career, starting off at The Palms in Silvis, Red Carpet Club in Moline, and Shamrock in Cordova before settling in at the John Deere Administrative building for nearly 20 years. Because of Jane’s work in the food industry, she enjoyed finding new restaurants to venture to as a family on Sundays, no matter how far the drive!

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Moline, and later attended Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. She was a gifted quilter, knitter, and LOVED collecting cookbooks. Jane was an excellent cook and was famous for her homemade jam and deviled eggs—both often declared “the best in the world” by her family.

Known for her spirited and determined personality, Jane was also deeply loving and generous. One of her greatest joys came from supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, proudly cheering them on in every sport and activity. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Fighting Illini, the Moline Maroons, and, of course, Elvis Presley. Jane often stated later in life that “Are You Lonesome Tonight” was her favorite Elvis song because of Charlie’s absence, but now she is lonesome no more.

Jane is survived by her children, Lynnie Harding of East Moline, and Larry (Kathy) Serres of Moline; 10 grandchildren, Jason (Christy) Minor, Lindsey (Don) Moore, Zach (Angie) Minor, Austin “Buddy” (Erin) Minor, Brittany (Kevin) Olson, Tanner (Leah) Minor, Trevor (Leah) Minor, Stephanie (Brian) Haezebroeck, Shawnae (Shawn) VanAlsburg, and Drew (Melissa) Serres; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, including the families of David O’Keefe, Richard Harding, and Kathy Serres. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charlie Serres; her brother, Clinton “Bud” Sheesley; and sons-in-law, Larry Minor, David O’Keefe and Richard Harding.
