Gary Lee Campbell was born on April 19, 1951, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Leon and Claretha (Reed) Campbell Sr. He married his best friend and partner of 36 years, Tammy Carr, on November 16, 1989, at the courthouse in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Gary proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. After returning home, life presented him with many challenges, but one afternoon in downtown Davenport, Gary found his calling. He decided to attend ministry school and went on to become pastor of Greater Rock Baptist Church. After 23 years of faithfully dedicating his time and resources, he retired from pastoral ministry.

He was a lifelong member of the Davenport YMCA and had a passion for weightlifting and helping others reach their goals. A true homebody with a continually curious mind, Gary enjoyed learning and growing each day. He often referred to himself as a “wordsmith,” regularly studying new words and incorporating them into his daily life. He loved reading, researching, and memorizing poetry; especially The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his family, particularly his children and grandchildren.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Tammy Campbell; children, Bruce Bibbs, Nicole Campbell, Tyrell Carr, Ratonia (Ryan Thompson) Carr, Breon Hickman, Keenyn (Genna) Hickman, and Alexis Campbell all of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, Alycea, Isaac, Koby, Karson, Aiden, Tyler, Tyson, Kaylee, Keeynna, Alexia, Nevaeh, Keenyn Jr., Kase, Harlow, Haze, Tayton, and Santino; ten great-grandchildren; lifelong friend, Donna Campbell; and his dog, Tori. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tiffany Campbell; great-grandson, Adrian; parents, Leon and Claretha Campbell Sr.; and siblings, Leon Jr., Patricia, and Pamela Campbell.
