Lynn Center, Illinois

Garet A. Egel, 52, of Lynn Center, Illinois, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2025.

A gathering to celebrate Garet’s life will be held in the spring and announced in the near future. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, under the direction of Trimble Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established in Garet’s memory for his children.

Garet Allen Egel was born May 15, 1973, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Florence Anderson and Ken Egel.

After graduating from Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa.

Although Garet graduated with a political science degree, he found his happiness in education. Whether he was teaching, coaching or acting as an administrator, he enjoyed being around students, teachers, school district employees, and families in the school community. He touched many lives during his career in both Iowa and Illinois school districts.

Garet married Brenda Fullerton, on July 26, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nevada and from their love and friendship came three children, Ethan, Keaton, and Ava. His family was Garet’s pride and joy and he was immensely proud of their accomplishments.

Some of Garet’s best memories were the ones he experienced with athletics. Whether he was coaching or watching, he took immense joy out of sports. He coached may of his children’s teams (from little league to the QC Hitmen and Tri-County Red Devils) as well as any sport that needed a coach when he was a teacher. If he was not watching his own children’s sports events, he could be found watching college and professional ball. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan, Los Angeles Angels fan, and although he was technically a Hawkeye later in life- he stayed loyal to his Iowa State Cyclones.

Garet will be remembered as a good person with a gentle soul, kind smile and the ability to put anyone at ease. To know him was to love him. He was a private person but cherished the friendships he had at all stages of his life and the memories he kept from them.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda; his three children, Ethan Egel of Rock Island, and Keaton and Ava Egel of Lynn Center; his in-laws he loved like his own family- Rick (Linda) Cary, Christine Cary (Darin Lemley), Nick (Danielle) Cary; his father, Ken (Conny) Egel; and step-siblings, Brenda Jensen, Julie Myrbo, Amanda (Gret Atkinson) Jensen, and Ann Jensen. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Florence “Flo” and Jamey Jensen.
