Daniel Thomas Murphy was born on November 29, 1951, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Frances Wylie and Gertrude Marjorie (Johnson) Murphy. After graduating from high school, Daniel began his career as a line worker at International Harvester/Case IH. He dedicated over 30 years to the company, working in multiple departments and often referring to himself as a “networking specialist.” He retired in 2004. Following retirement, Daniel took a part-time position at Tobacco Outlet, which could be considered as his dream job. He married the love of his life, Judith Barrett, on July 15, 1972, and the two spent 53 wonderful years together.
He was a former member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bettendorf, Iowa. He was proud to be a member of the UAW Local 1304. He was deeply proud of his Irish heritage, a pride that showed in his storytelling, humor, and love of family.
Daniel enjoyed talking, smoking, and watching the Chicago Bears. He liked to stay busy and worked with his hands often. He proudly described himself as a self-confessed chocoholic. Known for his humor, he often made a smart-ass comment just as a photo was being taken, making it difficult to capture a picture. Daniel never met a stranger and was always quick with a good joke, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. Most importantly, he loved his family and spending any time he could with them.
Daniel is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Murphy; sons, Daniel (Jennifer Johnson) Murphy II, Edward (Darcy) Murphy, Shawn (Billie) Murphy, Timothy (Nicole) Murphy, and Phillip (Caitlin) Murphy; grandchildren, Callie (Tyler) DeCap, Dylan Murphy, Andrew Murphy, Alex Murphy, Brenna Murphy, Liam Murphy, and Finnegan Murphy; and sisters, Marjorie Barrett, Muriel Murphy, and Janice Gaertnier. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Patrick Murphy, James Murphy, and Michael Murphy; a niece, Nicole Murphy; and four beloved children lost through miscarriage.
