William R. Wandrey Sr.

Moline, Illinois William R. Wandrey, Sr., 93, of Moline, Illinois, and Naples, Florida, well-known Illinois Banker, died Friday, November 9, 2001, in Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. The Reverend Dr. Robert Miller, First Congregational Church, Moline, will officiate. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association-Mississippi Valley Chapter or a favorite charity. William Richard Wandrey was born May 3, 1908, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ewald and Clara (Ihlenfeldt) Wandrey. He attended Northwestern University, and married Hattie Smith on July 1, 1933, in Chicago. Mr. Wandrey entered banking in 1925, and served as National Bank Examiner for the Comptroller of the Currency from 1931 to 1949, when he joined Union National Bank and Trust Company in Joliet as vice president and director. From 1960 until 1962, he was president of North Shore National Bank in Chicago. He moved to Moline in 1962 as president and director of Moline National Bank, and served as chairman of the bank from 1968 until 1983. In addition, he was director and chairman of the executive committee of the Havana National Bank, Havana, Illinois, and chairman and director of Farmers National Bank, Knoxville, Illinois, Bank of Galesburg, Galesburg, Illinois, and Midwest National Bank, Moline, which he helped organize. He served on the Board of Quad City First Company from 1983 until 1986. He was a member of Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club, Union League Club of Chicago, Moorings County Club, Naples, and Moline Rotary Club. He was part of the organizing group and on the original Board of Directors of the Association of Modern Banking in Illinois, a member of the board of the former Iowa-Illinois Development Group, a member of the Augustana College Presidents Advisory Board, and served on the U. S. Comptroller of the Currency Advisory Committee for the Seventh District. He was an active boater, enjoyed traveling and golfing, and was a gentleman farmer in Atkinson, Illinois. Bill is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Hattie; a son and daughter-in-law, JoAnn and William R. Wandrey Jr. of Moline; and three grandchildren, Andrew W. Wandrey and his wife, Tanya, of Rock Island, Illinois, Sarah Moran and her husband Jason of Moline, and Rachel Wandrey of Chicago; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Moran.
