Walter Erwin

Walter L. Erwin, Jr., 94, formerly of Rock Island, Illinois, died Thursday, January 26, 2017, in UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, with The Rev. Dr. David Esche officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery on Arsenal Island. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. Friends are invited to join the family at a funeral luncheon at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe following the burial.

Walter Lee Erwin was born September 3, 1922, in Earlham, Iowa, to Walter Sr. and Margaret Whitney Erwin. He served in the US Army during WW II, and married Kathryn Hallquist on November 13, 1942, in Kahoka, Missouri. She died September 2, 1998. He was an estimator for Desaulniers Printing Company, Moline, for 40 years, retiring in 1984. He was an active member of Moline Turners for many years, and a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, and Svithoid Club, Moline. He belonged to the Moline YMCA for many years, where he played racquetball until he was 90, and enjoyed golf, fishing, and volleyball.

Walter is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Randy Walters of Geneseo, Illinois; three grandchildren, Holly Popov and her husband Ted, Thom Walters and his girlfriend Denise Ballard, and Jay Walters and his wife Kelly; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn; a granddaughter, Lisa Walters; a sister, Katherine Bauersfeld; and a special friend, Carol Engelhaupht.
