Mitchell Van Hulle, 90, of Moline, Illinois, a decorated WW II Veteran, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, in Trinity Pathway Hospice at Trinity Medical Center, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline, with The Reverend Donald L. Levitt officiating. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park, where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is one hour before the services at the church. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities or the WW II Memorial. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is entrusted with arrangements.
Mitchell was born October 23, 1919, in East Moline, Illinois, the son of Maurice and Irma DeVliegher Van Hulle. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army during WW II, received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action; and was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Army?s third highest award, a Combat Infantry Badge, and six bronze battle stars for participating in battles in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and the Philippines.
He married June Scofield in 1941, in San Diego, California. She died in 1966. He married Mary Dreymon Burton in 1999, in Moline. She died in 2005. He was a crane operator at International Harvester for 30 years, retiring in 1975.
He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline; American Legion Post #246, Moline, and Golfmohr Golf Club in East Moline, and was a lifetime charter member of the WW II Memorial. He enjoyed woodworking and golf.
Mitchell is survived by two daughters, Carol Cather and Cheryl Irwin, both of East Moline; two grandsons, Dennis Kalinauskas and Kalel ?Mike? Lipe and his wife Robin; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Andrew Kalinauskas. He was preceded in death by his wives, two brothers, and two sisters.
