Robert W. Swedberg, 82, of Moline, Illinois, well-known area antique authority and former teacher, died Friday, April 14, 2006, in Forest Hill Health and Rehab Center, East Moline.
Services are 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation will be one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer?s Association.
Robert Walter Swedberg was born March 25, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Robert E. and Hulda (Pierson) Swedberg. He received his Master?s Degree in Education from Northwestern University. He married Harriett M. Thurston on June 18, 1950, in Noridge, Illinois.
Bob was a teacher for 34 years, and was head of the English Department at both Calvin Coolidge and Woodrow Wilson Junior High Schools in Moline, retiring in 1978. He was an antique enthusiast, collector, and dealer, authored more than 27 books on antiques, and wrote a weekly column ?Antique Echoes? for the Daily Dispatch for several years. He had been a partner in Swedberg and Scherer Furniture Refinishing. He was a member of Union Congregational Church, Moline, past secretary of the Methodist Men?s Club of the church, and past president of the Blackhawk Division of Teachers of English. He was a former Boy Scout leader, tutored children, and worked in the Wilson school book store. He received the annual Teacher?s Citizenship Award from Moline American Legion Post #246 in 1964.
Until he got sick on March 11, he helped care for his wife in their home for several years.
Bob is survived by his wife, Harriett; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen and Rick Sandberg of East Moline, and Cheryl Swedberg of Magdalena, New Mexico; and three grandchildren, Edy Swedberg, Cody Watson and Adam Watson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Walden McDonald.
