Robert D. Andrus

Robert D. Andrus, 87, a decorated WW II Veteran, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Tom Raphael-Nakos of Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf, officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to services. Burial is at Rock Island National Cemetery where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.

Robert Donald Andrus was born April 6, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Walter H. and Marie Emma (Tholl) Andrus.

Robert served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a fighter pilot in the 368th Fighter Group, 395th Fighter Squad, receiving two bronze battle stars. He later served in the Air Force Reserves, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Bob worked for Des Moines Marble and Mantle, Nebraska Tile, and Don Plumb Carpeting in Davenport, before retiring from Wayne Montgomery in Davenport.

Robert was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, at one time serving as Deacon and on the parsonage committee, and of Moose Lodge #28. He enjoyed model airplanes and was an avid amateur radio operator, with one of his call signs being K0LUG.

Bob is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Pam Andrus of Silvis, Illinois, and Richard and Kathy Andrus of Freemont, Nebraska; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann Marie and Steve Huffaker of Greenwood, South Carolina; six grandchildren including Eric and Sarah Andrus, and Chris and Jen Andrus, all of Moline; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Walt Andrus of Seaguin, Texas, and William Andrus of Des Moines, Iowa.
