East Moline, Illinois Richard H. "Dick" Karstens, 89, of East Moline, well-known Quad City restaurant owner, died Friday, May 2, 2003, in Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. The Reverend George Loveland will officiate. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and 1 to 2 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association. Richard Henry Karstens was born February 27, 1914, in Moline, the son of Frank and Ellen (Newberg) Karstens. He married Margaret Hull on May 18, 1938, in Moline. He was the original owner of three Moline Maid-Rites and the founder of Uncle Dick's Restaurant on Route 5 for 20 years. He previously was a route salesman for Five Point Bakery for 20 years. His first job out of high school was working for the original Whitey's Ice Cream, where he was the first non-family employee. He was a member of Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church, Moline, former president of the Moline Conservation Club, and a former member of Moline Elks Lodge. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, hunting, fishing, and singing. Dick is survived by his wife, Margaret; three children and their spouses, James L. and Susan Karstens of Carbon Cliff, Tom W. Karstens of Sumter, South Carolina, and Marianne and Gary Whitmer of East Moline; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
