Richard D. "Dick" Grawe

Richard D. “Dick” Grawe, 87, of Coal Valley, Illinois, passed away Monday, July 18, 2022, at home.

Services are 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 22, at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, with Father Anthony Ego officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Richard Donald Grawe was born February 8, 1935, in Worthington, Iowa, the son of Irvin and Maggie (Tobin) Grawe. He served in the U.S. Navy and married Nancy Holman on February 14, 1955, in Yuma, Arizona. She died February 16, 2018.

Dick owned and operated Valley Open-Air Market for over 15 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, the Kewanee American Legion Post #31, Forty and Eight, and was a friend of Bill W. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, going to the casino, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by four children, Diana (Tim) Peterson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Donald Grawe of Moline, David (Kay Jones) Grawe of Coal Valley, and Debra (Ed) Greif of Silvis; six grandchildren, Jessie Peterson, Jason (Pam Wantuch) Peterson, Justin (Liz) Peterson, Kristen (Nick) Miller, Mason (Nikki Mills) Grawe, and Courtney Grawe; eight great-grandchildren, Ellis and Jackson, Liam and Alexander, Mackenzie and Bailey, and Ryan and Sage; and his sweetheart, Anita Hatalsky. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, ; granddaughter, Rebecca Grawe; and siblings, Dan Grawe and Mary Ann Krantz.
