Randall Kent Engstrom was born January 21, 1946, in Moline, Illinois, the son of Raymond and Evelyn (Nightingale) Engstrom. He was raised in Bishop Hill, Illinois. His family moved to Coal Valley when he was in 6th grade, and he graduated from Moline High School in 1964. He married Bonnie Seys on November 13, 1971, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colona, Illinois.

He worked for John Deere for over 40 years as a computer analyst, officially retiring in 2006, but going back to work off and on until 2020.

Randy was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He volunteered at Hope Creek Care Center, the Coal Valley Food Pantry, and kept stats for the Orion girls’ basketball team. Baseball and softball were a big part of Randy’s life. He coached his daughters’ softball teams, played slow-pitch baseball in as many as four leagues at a time until the age of 68, webbed baseball gloves for Temples Sporting Goods, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan who loved attending yearly games with his family and made it to a World Series game. Above all else, family was the most important thing to Randy, especially his grandchildren.

Randy is survived by his beloved wife of just over 50-years, Bonnie; three daughters and sons-in-law, Heather and Matt Johnson of Elgin, Illinois, Heidi and Jeff Bernhardt of Coal Valley, and Holly and Sergio Mercado of LaGrange, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Aiden and Alexander Johnson, Cain and Vaughn Bernhardt, and Enrique, Estela, and Esteban Mercado; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Sandy Engstrom, Stan and Julie Engstrom, and Dennis and Linda Engstrom, all of Coal Valley; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Stephen Engstrom.
