Paul A. Hauck

Dr. Paul A. Hauck, 92, of Moline, Illinois, well-known area psychologist and author, died Thursday, August 17, 2017, in Bickford Senior Living, Moline.

A casual gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by a time of sharing at 6:30 p.m. in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory and private burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Quad City Symphony Orchestra or WVIK.

Dr. Hauck was born September 15, 1924, in Trundstadt. Germany. At the age of 3, he immigrated with his mother, brother, and sister to Newark, N.J., to join his father who immigrated earlier. Paul graduated from Weequake High School in Newark, and was drafted into the military on February 25, 1943. The Army sent him to Princeton University for one year to be trained as an engineer. He then spent a year at Camp Carson, Colorado Springs. In September, 1944, he was sent to Europe as a driver and interpreter for Regimental Headquarters.

Paul was in combat until the end of the war and was discharged December 8, 1945. He continued with his college education at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey, and then attended the University of Utah, where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1953. It was in Salt Lake City that Paul met his wife, Marceleen Steenburgen. They married November 26, 1953, in Boise, Idaho. Together they had three children: Kathy, Melanie, and Stephanie.

Paul was Chief Psychologist of the East Moline State Hospital. He then became director of The Western Mental Health Center in Marshall, Minnesota. After which, he became the Chief Psychologist at the Peoria Mental Health Center, in Peoria, Illinois. In 1968 he opened his own practice in Moline, and became the first psychologist to have a private practice in the Quad Cities. He received many awards and recognitions throughout his career, including receiving the Illinois Most Distinguished Psychologist Award. He retired in 2007.

Paul spoke around the world and authored 16 books on psychology, which have sold over a million copies in 23 languages. His column, The Human Scene, was published in The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus from 1968 to 2006. Paul pursued skiing, tennis, golf, bicycling, bridge, piano, and the study of Spanish, French and German. Paul said, "Though he was a master of none, he loved them all."

He is survived by his wife, Marcie; his daughters and their spouses: Kathy and Henry Holladay, Melanie Hauck and Jim Hertel, Stephanie and Craig Marchesi, plus six grandchildren, Teresa Dopler and her husband Tom, Alex, Grant and Will Hertel; Robert and Christian Marchesi, plus one great-grandson, Hunter Moore; as well as his sister, Charlotte Fielding. He was preceded in death by his brother, Albin Hauck.
