Melva L. Slayden, age 69, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Coal Valley, Illinois, died, Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, Illinois, with the Reverend Richard Knox of Muscatine, Iowa, officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home, burial will be in the Coal Valley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The former Melva Louise Horn was born May 11, 1933 in Royalton, Kentucky, the daughter of Tom and Dora (Patten) Horn. She married Billy Joe Slayden on July 16, 1953 in Angola, Indiana. Mrs. Slayden was employed in food services at the Quad City Airport in Moline, Illinois for 18 years, retiring in 1999. Since moving to Waterloo, Iowa she and Mr. Slayden have been employed at Wal-Mart. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and flowers. And will always be remembered as a loving, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Slaydens' survivors include her husband, Billy Joe of Waterloo, Iowa; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Donald Glaspie of Waterloo, Iowa; three sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Betty Slayden of Omaha, Nebraska, Jamie and Sandra Slayden of Austin, Texas, and Doug and Mary Jo Slayden of Moline, Illinois; ten grandchildren, Nakol, Jessica, Justin, Heather, Colt, Tiffany, Kayleen, Tommy, Billy, and Jacob; two great-grandchildren, Faith and Jeremiah; four brothers, William T. Horn Jr., Bill Horn, Ermal Horn, and Luther Horn. Two brothers, Clifford and Calvin Horn, and her son, Jeff, preceded her in death.
