The former Mary Elizabeth Gainey was born February 13, 1924, in Erie, Illinois, the daughter of Stacy and Harriet (Stohl) Gainey. She graduated from Geneseo High School and went on to marry John Newton on November 8, 1947, in Colona, Illinois. He died February 22, 2007.

She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, ran her own wedding cake business for several years, and was nominated for the Rock Island County Good Neighbor Award. She was a wonderful cook who was known for her bread and Waldorf-Astoria Red Cake. She was an avid reader and enjoyed being outdoors working in her garden and mowing her lawn (which she did well into her 90’s). Above all else, family was the most important thing to Mary.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son at birth, Gerald D. Newton; siblings, Helen Busenbark, Dorothy Diericks, and Wilbur and Richard Gainey; and a daughter-in-law, Pamela Newton.
