Marian Menk Wasson, 84, of Moline, Illinois, a devoted mother and grandmother and a lover of music, died Thursday, August 26, 2010, in Trinity Rock Island.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Riverside United Methodist Church, 712 16th Street, Moline, Illinois. Cremation will follow the funeral and burial is in Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur, Illinois. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, 601 21st Street, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Music Fund at Riverside United Methodist Church.
The former Marian Elizabeth Menk was born February 17, 1926, in Staunton, Illinois, the daughter of Hugh and Grace Camp Menk. She graduated from Millikin University, Decatur, and married Van R. Wasson on July 29, 1950, in Staunton. He died November 28, 2004. In earlier years, she was a vocal music teacher in Davenport, Iowa, and Director of Music at Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline.
Marian was an active member of Riverside United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir for many years, served on the Administrative Board, and was president of United Methodist Women. Active in community affairs, she was a member of Chapter BL of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Sorority, Eastern Star Chapter #616 in Staunton, Rock Island County Historical Society, Col. Davenport House Historical Foundation, and was a long time volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She had a love and passion for music, and was active as a pianist and a soloist, and is remembered for singing duets with her husband.
Marian is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and James Freyenberger of Wayland, Iowa, and Diane and Rev. Leonard Eberhart of Grinnell, Iowa; four grandchildren, Deidre Freyenberger, Javan Freyenberger, Tawnya Coates and her husband Vern, and Erin McGargill and her husband Shawn; and three great-grandchildren, Acacia and Olivia Coates and Calleigh McGargill. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother , Merlin Menk, and a sister, Harriett Olive Menk.
