Leonard A. "Len" VanOteghem, 89, of Rock Island, Illinois, formerly of Moline, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, in Silver Cross Health and Rehabilitation Pavilion, Rock Island.
A private family service will be held at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Private burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Deacon?s Fund at First United Presbyterian Church, Moline.
Leonard August VanOteghem was born May 31, 1921, in Moline, to Alphonse and Florence Hoogerwerf VanOteghem. He served in the U. S. Navy during WW II aboard ship in the Pacific. He married Betty Lou Cramer on September 2, 1949, in Moline. She died June 24, 2009. He worked as a toolmaker for John Deere Plow-Planter Works for 30 years, retiring in 1971. He owned and operated a service station in Eagle River, Wisconsin, from 1971 to 1978, then took a position at Meyer?s Tree Farm in Andalusia, Illinois, until his retirement in 1984.
Len was an active member of First United Presbyterian Church, Moline, where he had been an Elder, a Deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed serving his Lord as a former chairman of the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Rock Island County and the Fellow Heirs Association, and by visiting the sick and shut-in.
Len is survived by four children and their spouses, Leonard J. and Pat VanOteghem of Gilbert, Arizona, Richard A. and Melody VanOteghem of Milan, Illinois, Teresa M. and Phillip Nielsen of Hokah, Minnesota, and Paul L. and Rhonda VanOteghem of O?Fallon, Illinois; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert C. and Norma VanOteghem of Moline, William and Jeanne VanOteghem of Holcombe, Wisconsin, and John and Sally VanOteghem of Moline. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, his parents, and a brother, Richard VanOteghem.
