Joy, Illinois Leona C. Kadel, 86, of Joy, Illinois, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2:00 PM at Trimble Funeral Home, Aledo. Visitation is Thursday from 12:00 Noon until service time. Burial will be in Leech Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Prairie Presbyterian Church or the Buffalo Prairie Masonic Lodge. Leona was born on April 1, 1917, in Eliza Township, Mercer County, Illinois, to Lewis Everett and Myrtle (Leech) Barlett. She married Harold W. Kadel on March 15, 1937 in Muscatine. He preceded her in death on February 10, 2001. Leona farmed with her husband in Duncan Township. They enjoyed spending their winters in Texas for 26 years. Leona enjoyed traveling, auctions and visiting with friends, especially her "Texas Friends". She was an avid bingo and card player. Leona was a member of the Buffalo Prairie Presbyterian Church; a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, #516 of Buffalo Prairie and of the Mercer County Farm Bureau. Leona is survived by a daughter, Sandra Higgins of Joy; a son and daughter-in-law, Daryl and Joyce Kadel of Joy; 5 grandchildren, Kyle Higgins, Ryan Higgins, Lori Smith, Devon Kadel, and Blake Kadel; and 6 great-grandchildren, Daniel and Sarah Higgins, Britni, Laci and Shayli Higgins, and James ‘Jamie' Smith. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son-in-law, Dale Higgins; an infant great-grandson, Ethan Higgins; and a sister, Laura Hudson.
