Lanny C. Powell

Lanny C. Powell, 74, of East Moline, Illinois, passed away September 10, 2016 at the Clarissa
Cook Hospice House, the result of long term heart disease.

Cremation has taken place at Trimble Crematory. A memorial celebration will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home, 701 12th Street, Moline. A hospitality gathering and time of sharing will follow in CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lanny Powell Memorial Fund in support of his grandchildren's education.

Lanny was born in Dixon, Illinois, on October 30, 1941, to Clyde and Roberta O'Brien Powell. He was married to Linda K. Pease on July 28, 1963, in Bloomington, Illinois. He spent his formative years in Polo, Illinois, and earned his Bachelors of Education and Masters of Geography at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Dr. Powell earned his Ph.D. in Geography and Agriculture Economics from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois in 1971. He taught at Bloomington Junior High School, Arizona State University, Iowa State University, Illinois State University, St. Ambrose University and Black Hawk College. Dr. Powell served as the Executive Secretary to the Deputy Assistant Director at the National Science Foundation, in Washington, D.C.

Following his teaching career, Lanny worked as a business consultant and newspaper editor for River Cities Reader. He was an avid reader, jazz enthusiast, Illini fan, button collector, traveler, loving father, grandfather, and friend. He reveled in the grandeur of the Montana Rocky Mountains, as well as the beauty of the Oregon and British Columbia coast.

Lanny was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Maria, Marlene, and Marilyn, and his grandson, Zachary Powell. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his sister, Virgine Johnson (Vernon) of Ottawa, Illinois; and four children, Lisa Powell Williams (Brian) of Moline, Illinois, Landon Scott Powell (Susan) of Moline, Illinois, Leslie Powell-Skinner (Kerry) of Eldridge Iowa; and Lane Michael Powell (Jessica) of Harmony, Minnesota. He has nine grandchildren, Katherine Williams, Nicholas Powell, Rachel Powell, Jacob Powell, Joshua Powell, Alannah Skinner, Kyle Skinner, Andrew Skinner, and Savannah Skinner.

The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for their compassionate care and expertise. Additionally, we thank Genesis Hospice Homecare and the Clarissa Cook Hospice House staff for their service and loving care.
