John L. Verhaar, 89, of Moline, Illinois, died Friday, March 21, 2008, in Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Roger Christianson officiating. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to In-Touch Adult Day Care.
John Lewis Verhaar was born February 24, 1919, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of John and Henrietta (Youngvorst) Verhaar. The family moved to the Quad Cities area when John was 11 years old. In WW II, he served as a commissioned Army Air Corps officer and decorated air transport pilot. He married Edith Erickson on July 9, 1944, in Alliance, Nebraska. She died December 31, 2000. He was employed at Settle Construction Company for 30 years, retiring as general superintendent in 1986.
He was past president of Moline Turners, and a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline. He was a good athlete and a major football fan, and enjoyed volleyball, softball and swimming. He was also a musician, playing the trumpet and singing.
John is survived by three children and their spouses, John C. and Janet Verhaar of Rockton, Illinois, Jean L. Verhaar and Barry Rudick of Houston, Texas, and James L. and Julie Verhaar of Troy, Illinois, and two grandsons, John Lee and Daniel James Verhaar. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and a sister, Jennie Erickson.
