Robert L. Jackson, 81, of Sherrard, Illinois, well-known Sherrard High School Athletic Director and basketball coach, died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, Iowa.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Preemption United Methodist Church, Preemption, Illinois. Burial is in Preemption Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to the church or Sherrard Academic Foundation.
Robert Leslie Jackson was born October 12, 1930, in Millersburg, Illinois, the son of Ralph and Letha Dodson Jackson. He graduated from Joy High School in 1948, and from Western Illinois University in 1952, and did graduate work at the University of Iowa. He married Donna Hamrick on August 17, 1952, in Wyanet, Illinois.
Bob began teaching and coaching at Joy High School, from 1952 to 1958. He moved to Sherrard High School in 1958, where he taught history and driver?s education and was Head Basketball Coach from 1958 until 1973; Athletic Director from 1958 to 1986; and Dean of Students from 1973 until retiring in 1986. After retirement, he was a funeral assistant at Trimble Funeral Homes for 10 years.
Bob was a member of the Board of Directors of Sherrard Academic Foundation, a member of Preemption United Methodist Church and a former member of the Milan Rotary Club. He was inducted into the Illinois Athletic Directors Hall of Fame in 1997, and named Athletic Director of the Year in Class A in 1986. Upon his retirement in 1986, a new gym at Sherrard High School was named in his honor.
Bob is survived by his wife, Donna; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Rick Amy of Illinois City, and Janet and Dave Swanson of Sherrard; five grandsons and their spouses, Todd and Carrie Swanson, Doug and Jackie Swanson, Steve and Staci Amy, Kevin Amy, and Keith Amy; seven great-grandchildren, Drew and Carter Swanson, Adalyn, Ellayna and Kamryn Swanson, and Cooper and Hawk Amy; a sister-in-law, Lois Jackson of Aledo; and a brother-in-law, Dave Hessman of Spencer, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Delmar Jackson, and a sister, Arlene Hessman.
