John was born on September 10, 1970 in Davenport, IA, the son of Arthur and Ruth (Knipe) Muerhoff. He married Tammy Dahl on January 21, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada at Caesar's Palace.

John is survived by his wife Tammy (Dahl), son, Johnny, both of Moline, IL, sister, Deb Worden and her husband David and daughter Amanda, of Arvada, CO, sister-in-law Lori Noack and her husband, Adam, and nephews David Novellino, and Christian Novellino, all of Bismarck, ND, mother, Ruth Muerhoff of Fort Madison, IA, and mother-in-law, Lynn Heinz, of Moline, IL. He was preceded in death by his father.

John grew up in Fort Madison, IA where he was a high school star in both basketball and baseball. As a high school senior, he was a 2nd team all star state guard averaging 25.5 points per game and scored 84 three points shots. He graduated from Aquinas High School in 1988. Later that year, he moved to Council Bluffs, IA to attend Iowa Western Community College on a basketball scholarship. He played both baseball and basketball in college. He still holds the career scoring record at Iowa Western Community College.

John made a career of his high school job working for Hy-Vee for 33 years. He worked many positions at many stores including many leadership positions. He ended his tenure with Hy-Vee as the C-Store Manager in Silvis, IL. In addition to being an amazing and yet modest athlete, John was a huge sports fan. He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, the LA Lakers, the Chicago Cubs, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. His greatest joy was giving to others and never wanting any recognition for his kindness, caring, mentorship, leadership, and compassion toward others. The lights of his life were his wife, Tammy, and his son, Johnny.
