Janet M. McElhiney, 88, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

A celebration of Jan’s life will be held when her beloved bluebirds return in the Spring. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, under the direction of Trimble Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date. Donations per Jan’s request are to be given as kindness and encouragement to people in need.

The former Janet Muriel Thorngren was born October 31, 1934, in Moline, the daughter of Walter and Florence (Jacobson) Thorngren. She married Teddy McElhiney on May 22, 1952.

Jan loved gathering with her family and friends and adding happiness to all in her life.

Janet is survived by her beloved husband of over 70 years, Ted; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Nancy McElhiney of Bettendorf, Pat and Charmayne McElhiney of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Paul and Kathy McElhiney of Payola, Kansas; six grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Thorngren of Grand Island, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Betty Hufford, Walter Thorngren, and Shirley Otis.
