James R. Rodney

Jim "Pappy" Rodney, 75, of Moline, Illinois, formerly of Norris, Illinois, died Tuesday, February 16, 2016, peacefully at his residence, surrounded by his wife and a close friend, with four of his children arriving minutes after.

A hospitality visitation will be 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, where there will be a time of sharing at 4:30 p.m. Following services, cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery in Canton, Illinois, at a later date. Memorials may be made to Junior Achievement or the American Cancer Society.

James Reed Rodney was born February 3, 1941, in Canton, the son of Albert and Mary (Reed) Rodney. He graduated from Canton High School in 1959, and married Bonnie Ironfield later that year in Denver, Colorado. He was a missile instructor in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, achieving the rank of Airman First Class. He married Sunny Grotegeer in 1973, in Canton.

Jim had worked at International Harvester for 11 years before owning and operating Woodstoves N Things in Orion, Illinois for several years. He became the Sales Manager at Sexton Ford in Moline before opening Scotty's Car Wash in East Moline, retiring in 2005.

Jim loved fishing and raising tropical fish, building model airplanes, woodworking, gardening, and had a passion for British sports cars (at one time owning two at the same time). In his younger days, he loved riding motorcycles and hunting morel mushrooms. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family at the Pauper's Den in East Moline and the Yankee Doodle in Moline. He loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports, and had a passion for the Chicago Cubs, which he had hoped to see win a World Series in his lifetime.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sunny Rodney of Moline; children and their spouses, Donna and Dave Hoffman of Dumas, Texas, Bill Rodney of Brighton, Colorado, James II and Annia Rodney of Hoxie, Arkansas, Carrie and Rick Schultz of Greeley, Colorado, Chris and Anne McGatha of Rock Island, Kim Rodney of Sherrard, and Kelli Rodney and Kevin Cook of Orion; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Donald and Cindy Rodney of Peoria, Illinois, and Deborah and Mary Rodney of Canton. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Scott, a son-in-law, Rick Schultz, and his ex-wife, Bonnie Rodney.
