James D. Guy, Sr., 81, of Moline, Illinois, died Saturday, November 23, 2013, in Unity Point Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013, at Homewood Evangelical Free Church, Moline, with The Reverend Mark Frazee officiating. Burial is in Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will precede the funeral from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to the church or American Diabetes Association. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is in charge of arrangements.

James David Guy was born February 23, 1932, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of James W. and Ida Schmitt Guy. Jim was diagnosed with diabetes, type I, when he was two years old. He married Dorothy Adams on February 16, 1952, in Milwaukee. He was a salesman for many years, but his main love was being a firefighter for St. Francis, Wisconsin. Jim retired from Sears in Davenport, Iowa, in 1989, after bilateral leg amputations. He was a member of Homewood Evangelical Free Church and Woodcarvers of America. He enjoyed his family, music, woodcarving, gardening, knitting, and listening to recorded books. Jim was an inspiration to everyone who knew him, showing an inner strength and determination through all the years of dealing with his disease and complications. He often praised the Lord, his wife, and his physicians for his care and long life.

Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy; three children and their spouses, Dr. James D. Jr. and Joan Guy of South Pasadena, California, Sharon and Randy Lynch of Moline, and Ruth and Paul Gorden of Melissa, Texas; six grandchildren, Adam Lynch and his wife Angela, Mark Lynch and his wife Monica, Lisa Taylor, Julie Guy, Jonathan Guy, and William Guy; five great-grandchildren; a half-brother and two half-sisters. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Gandjei.
