Clifford J. Coon, 73, of Moline, Illinois, , a decorated Army veteran, died Monday, June 16, 2008, in Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present Military honors. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, where Silvis Lodge #898, AF & AM, will conduct Masonic funeral services at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Scottish Rite Building Fund.
Clifford Junior Coon was born November 29, 1934, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Clifford Douglas and Josephine Marie (Paulson) Coon. He married Betty Tunnell on June 2, 1979, in Rock Island.
Cliff served in the U. S. Army for over 20 years, retiring in 1974. He served in both the Korean War and Vietnam War, and among other awards, he received the Bronze Star Medal, three Purple Heart Awards, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. After retiring from the Army, he worked for the Corps of Engineers for over 20 years, at Lock and Dam 17 in the Rock Island District and the Joliet Brandon Road Lock and Dam, retiring in 1997.
Cliff was a member of Silvis Lodge #898, AF & AM; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline; Eagles Aerie #1839, Silvis; American Legion Post #122, Silvis; VFW Post #8890, East Moline; Korea War Veterans Association; and the Military Order of the Cootie. He loved traveling and enjoyed fishing.
Cliff is survived by his wife, Betty; children and their spouses, Josephine and John Nipper of Moline; Kristen and Jess Bauman of Necedah, Wisconsin, Emma and Bill Wallace of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Linda and Jim Morrison of Wilton, Iowa, and Joe and Sherri Gehlken of Edgington, Illinois; grandchildren, Brennon Nipper, Audrianna, Jesse and Phillip Bauman, Brianne, Caitlyn and Joey Gehlken, Susan McElderry, Kelli Miller, Melinda Lisk, Jeremy Barney, and Tom Wallace; great-grandchildren, Cody, Tiffany, Stephanie, Cheyenne, Tristan, Justin, Lucas, and Dylan; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Richard Hahn, and a brother and sister-in-law, Gordy and Heather Coon, all of Davenport.
