Irene S. Nelson, 101, formerly of Friendship Manor, Rock Island, East Moline and Moline, Illinois, died Saturday, August 15, 2015, at The Forum at Knightsbridge, Columbus, Ohio.

Private burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, is serving the family.

The former Irene Sadie Carlson was born July 3, 1914, in Moline, to Carl and Lilly (Karlsson) Carlson, she graduated from Western Illinois University and The Art Institute of Chicago, She married Stanley A. Nelson on July 3, 1937, in Hillsdale, Michigan. He died January 23, 1995.

Irene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, and the church's Good Will Society. She was past president of Longfellow School PTA, and was a Cub Scout, Brownie, and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of Evelyn Hodgson Circle of King's Daughters, Geneseo Art League, Blackhawk Hiking Club, Chapter KT of P.E.O. Sisterhood, and Left Bank Art League. She was an artist and loved to paint, draw, etch and carve block prints. She designed banners for her church, participated in local art exhibitions, and won "Best of Show" twice at Maple City Fine Arts Exhibit.

Irene is survived by three children, Sylvia King and her husband Dr. Lonnie King, of Powell, Ohio, Stuart Nelson of Leadville, Colorado, and Jerry Nelson of Saugatuck, Michigan; two grandchildren, William King and Meghan Hock and her husband Robert; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, and her sister, Jeanne Ketchum.
