Hugh E. Saunders, 72, of Moline, died, May 16, 2005, at his residence.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Burial of cremains will be in National Cemetery following the service. Memorials may be given to Trinity Pathway Hospice Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline, where Hugh was a member.
Hugh Edward Saunders was born October 17, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa the son of John C. and Lucille (Naillieux) Saunders, and moved to Ottumwa, Iowa in 1934, where he graduated from high school in 1950. He graduated from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, as a mechanical engineer in 1955. Hugh married the former Sharon F. Sammon December 26, 1952 in Nashua, Iowa. He was ordered into the U.S. Air Force, Sioux City Air Base, Iowa, as an Installation Engineer in 1955.
Hugh joined the Command at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1963 as a general engineer. He worked in research and development and product assurance. He retired in 1988 as division chief of management and data systems in product assurance. Previously he was employed at Mast Development Company, a small research and development firm in Davenport, Iowa, as manager of the ozone division. While there he earned his Registered Professional Engineer Certificate by examination to the State of Illinois in 1960.
Hugh enjoyed family gatherings, playing golf with friends, woodworking, home maintenance, computer programming, oil and watercolor painting, square dancing, and ballroom dancing. He never missed an opportunity to support his grandchildren?s sports and academic activities.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon, daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Brian Cunningham, Moline, son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Cindy Saunders, Prophetstown, Illinois, four grandchildren, Chris Cunningham, Chicago, Illinois, Katie Cunningham, Chicago, Illinois, Justin Saunders, Prophetstown, Illinois, and Jessica Saunders, Prophetstown, Illinois. A brother, David Saunders, preceded him in death. The family wishes to thank Dr. C. Constaninou, his staff, and Trinity Pathay Hospice, for their Compassionate Care.
