Henry Frederick Lucas, 94, of Sherrard, Illinois, died Thursday, November 12, 2020, at Genesis Medical Center in Silvis, Illinois.

Private graveside services will be held at Rock Island National Cemetery. Cremation will take place prior to services at Trimble Crematory, Moline, under the direction of Trimble Funeral Home.

Henry Frederick Lucas, Jr. was born May 3, 1926 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Henry Sr. and Adeline (Regner) Lucas. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and married Patricia Williams on October 3, 1953 in Chicago.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago and went on to work as a chemist at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois for 42 years. While at Argonne, he focused his research on the health effects of Radon Gas and went on to invent the Lucas Cell, which is recognized as a sensitive, reliable method for measuring Radon. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, reading, doing puzzles and was very active in Rotary International. Henry also enjoyed square dancing, and is where he met his love, Patricia.

Henry is survived by his three children; Catherine (David) Harms of Sherrard, IL, Mary (Jason) Warner of Warrenville, IL, and John (Kim) Lucas of Lombard, IL; sisters Mary Ann Lucas of East St. Louis, IL, and Joan (David) Reichardt of Phoenix, AZ; eight Grandchildren; two Great-grandchildren; and his Daughter-in-Law, Angie Lucas of Fitchburg, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; his son, Robert H. Lucas; and his sister, Deslene J. Saunders.
