Harry O. Perez, 96, of Moline, Illinois, died Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 25, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moline, with Father Antonio Dittmer officiating. There will be a viewing one hour prior to services. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Memorials may be made to the food pantry at the church.

Harry Oscar Perez was born October 5, 1924, in Moline, to Augustine and Mary (Espinosa) Perez. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He married Florence Padilla in June of 1945, in Silvis. He later married Ethel (Pratt) Owens on September 21, 1964, in Moline. She died May 25, 2016.

He worked in the shipping department at John Deere for over 39 years While working for John Deere, he also worked for the Rock Island Arsenal and 20 years for Franks Foundry.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moline and the Moline American Legion Post #246, serving on the honor guard for over 20 years and as finance officer for 8 years. He was the first Hispanic Alderman in the City of Moline, serving in the 1st Ward. He also served on the Rock Island County Board and was currently a Trustee for Moline Township. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and being with his family.

Survivors include children, Desnie Leander of Davenport, Steven Perez of East Moline, and Sandra (Michael) McCay of Davenport; stepson, Merritt Owens of Arizona; sister, Esther McCullough of Moline; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; stepchildren, Jim Owens and Dixie VanAsch; and many siblings.
