Emerson D. ?Shorty? Wachob, 87, formerly of Moline, Illinois, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, in Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Donald Knowles officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer?s Association.
Emerson (Shorty) Dale Wachob, was born to Mamie Alice (Wright) and Jacob Floyd Wachob in the sleepy little town of Jennerstown, Pennsylvania on July 6, 1923. He grew up with his parents and two sisters, Sara Mae and Clara Belle, in Jennerstown, and graduated from Boswell High School and Clearfield Aviation Institute.
Emerson enlisted in the Army Air Corps in March of 1944, and married Eileen Emma Schnute on August 6, 1945, in Washington, D.C. ? the day the first ATOMIC bomb was dropped on Japan. He started with International Harvester on May 6, 1946 at the refrigerator plant in Evansville, Indiana, then transferred to the Farmall (tractor) Plant in Rock Island on January 9, 1956, where he worked his way up to Chief Process Engineer. He retired on November 30, 1978, although Farmall asked him back several times as a consultant in the years that followed.
During his retirement years, Emerson engaged himself in such activities as traveling, golf, fishing, gardening, and music. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Moline.
Emerson is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Eileen Emma Wachob; three children, Robert Dale Wachob and his wife Mary Ellen of Glastonbury, Connecticut, Yvonne Ann Beverage and her husband Larry of Bradenton, Florida, and Douglas Floyd Wachob and his wife Nancy Steinmeyer of Bull Valley, Illinois; five grandchildren, Brian Wachob and his wife Fatima, Lisa Wachob, Kristin Baugher and her husband Kirk, Katie Douglass and her husband John, and Lauren Beverage; four great grandchildren Ella Baugher, Andrew Baugher, Adam Wachob, and Teagan Douglass; and two sisters, Sara Mae Phillips and her husband Lawrence and Clara Belle Lape, all of Virginia.
