Services for Glenn O. Axne, 81, of Coal Valley, Illinois, are 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Coal Valley, with Rev. Robert Hagen officiating. Burial is in National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal, where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to the church.

Mr. Axne died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Veterans Administration Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born March 1, 1922, in Ottesen, Iowa, the son of Halvard and Selma (Hagen) Axne. He served as a Seabee in the U. S. Navy during WW II, and helped reconstruct Pearl Harbor and built the runways at Iwo Jima. He married Florence Easley on August 4, 1945, in Gilmore City, Iowa. He was a self-employed carpenter, and also made knives known as Glenn's Handcrafted Knives. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Coal Valley, and was a member of Lutheran Layman's League and Sons of Norway. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and golf, and invented and held the patent on the "Be-Shur Tee Placer."

Glenn is survived by his wife, Florence; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Dorinda Axne of Peoria, Illinois; a daughter and son-in-law, Deanna and Dale Bender of Atlanta, Illinois; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Morris and Marion Axne of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and a sister and two brothers-in-law, Violet and Howard Himrod of Humboldt, Iowa, and Hank Danner of Tucson, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gladys Danner.
