Gladys Brooks, 89, of East Moline, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday at Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline with Rev. Janice Griffith officiating. Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, is assisting the family. Gladys Myrtle Axene was born December 20, 1914 in Moline, daughter of John and Hulda (Beckman) Axene. She married John R. Brooks at Salem Lutheran Church, Moline, September 23, 1939. From 1932 to 1942, Gladys was a Secretary at McLaughlin Body Company, Moline. John and Gladys became the franchise holders for Tastee Freez of West Central Illinois in 1954. Gladys was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline, United Methodist Women, Margaret Bottome Circle King's Daughters, Moline Womens Club - Garden Department #6, was a life member of the Nebraska PTA, and a life member at Oakwood Country Club. Survivors include three sons, Steve Brooks of Seattle, Mark Brooks of East Moline, Scott and Liz Brooks of Honolulu; five grandchildren, Jaxon Brooks and Rachel Connolly of Seattle, Brandon Brooks of Long Beach, Nicole and Jessica Brooks of Honolulu; her first great grandchild is due in July. She was preceded in death by her husband John, and five brothers, Oscar, Clarence, Harry, Arnold, and Everett Axene.
