Rock Island, Illinois Gladys C. Rheim, 98, a resident of Friendship Manor, Rock Island, formerly of Moline and Bloomington, Illinois, died Sunday, October 7, 2001, in Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is 12:30 pm. Wednesday in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline, or Friendship Manor Benevolent Fund, Rock Island. The former Gladys Caroline Schaum was born August 14, 1903, in Bloomington, the daughter of Edward Nathan and Clara Caroline (Brandenberg) Schaum. She graduated from Bloomington schools and Mrs. Gray's Academy of Music, Bloomington. She married Benedict J. Kraft on March 20, 1921, in Bloomington. He died February 21, 1928. She married George C. Rheim on November 27, 1935, in Bloomington. He died March 14, 1984, in Rock Island. Mrs. Rheim was active for many years in many areas of church work, first in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bloomington, and later Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline. She was a Sunday school and Bible class teacher, and was a charter member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society in both churches. She was active with the American Red Cross for many years from before the First World War until after the Second World War, an active member of Parent-Teacher Association, and a Gold Star member of the Disabled American Veterans Association for many years. She was a board member of the former Moline Public Hospital Auxiliary and editor of its newsletter, a past president of the Friendship Manor Resident Council, and a member of the Development Committee for the Tree of Life at Friendship Manor, until illness overtook her. She was a member of Blanche Wurbs Circle of Kings' Daughters, Women's Club of Moline, Garden Department #5, Philanthropic, YWCA, American Home, Art and Literature Group, and AARP. Gladys was the mother of three children, Benedict Kraft, and David and Marlys Rheim, all of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Louise Voight of Kankakee, and Caroline Arnold and Harold Maxwell of Bloomington, and two very special friends, Gladys and Doyle Heather of Rock Island.
